I played a $12 trifecta boxed, how much was the payout?
Way to go Bruce!
The $2 trifecta payout was $70.80, so multiply that times 6 for $424.80. Nice!
bet $ 10.00 exacta on preakness if 2 on exacta paid 18.40 multiple by 5
Yes!
Except the $2 exacta paid $18.60, not $18.40… the $10 exacta is $93. Congrats!
Played $24.00 exacta box (4 horses: 4 5 7 & 9); how much was payout?
If I understand your question, you paid $24 for your four horse exacta box, correct? That means that you your wager was actually a $2 exacta that paid $18.60. Sometimes it works out that way!
My suggestion for a similar situation next time would be to do additional exacta box of the two horses at low odds (in this case I’ll Have Another and Bodemeister). For example, if you did an additional $5 box of just those two (wager total = $10) the payout would have been $46.50. You would have come out $31.10 ahead.
You can also check out a post we did for the Derby that discussed how to structure exactas, trifectas and superfectas beyond the box.

Thank you so much, appreciate you knowledge. Beginner Blues :)
At least you had the right horses! Effective wagering is the hardest part of the game IMO and takes awhile. The good news is that it’s really fun and frequently rewarding to practice! :)
What is the difference between a trifecta and a trifecta box
A box is just a way to place a trifecta wager (or any of the single race exotic wagers, such as exacta and superfecta). When you box your selections you’re actually making multiple wagers to cover all of the outcomes regardless of order of finish.
For example, a $1 trifecta box of 3 horses is $6. If those three horses finish 1-2-3 in any order you have a winning ticket.
We have a couple of posts that go into greater detail. This one explains all wagers, including boxing, keying and wheeling single race exotics:
