Getting in the Belmont Mood
By Dana Byerly, Hello Race Fans Co-founder

Are you in the mood for the Belmont Stakes yet? Don’t let the lack of Triple Crown get you down, this year’s field is packed, including both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner. Could this be a year where each Triple Crown race is won by a different horse or will Orb or Oxbow go two for three?

In 2011 both the Derby and Preakness winners ran in the Belmont Stakes, but longshot Ruler on Ice took the honors at odds of almost 25-1. To help get you in the mood (and to try out our snazzy new slider!) here’s a look at recent Triple Crown years that produced three different winners.

As an extra bonus, three of the last five Belmont Stakes winners have gone on to finish in the money in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. 2010 Belmont winner Drosselmeyer won the 2011 Classic with Ruler on Ice finishing third. And 2009 Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird finished third in that year’s Classic. And let’s not forget Game on Dude, who finished 4th in the 2010 Belmont Stakes and went on to finish 2nd in the 2011 Classic.

The post position draw is complete and we’ll have our annual Belmont Cheat sheet later on today. We’ll also have our in-depth look at the contenders pedigrees, stay tuned!
