Week of July 19, 2010
By Dana Byerly, Hello Race Fans Co-founder

This weekend offered more proof that Paddy o’Prado, Life at Ten and Tuscan Evening are forces to be reckoned with as all three turned in extremely impressive performances. Sidney’s Candy made his first start since his troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby and put in a solid effort for second getting nailed on the wire by Skipshot in the Swaps Stakes. General Quarters was off the board in the Arlington Handicap and ended up with an injury.

Both Belmont Park and Hollywood Park closed their Spring/Summer meets this weekend and Saratoga and Del Mar begin their stellar summer meets this week. If you’re in Southern California and Foursquare user, don’t forget to check in every time you go to Del Mar as they’ve kicked off a generous Foursquare rewards program!

In other good news Monmouth Park’s experimental elite meet marked it’s half way point with huge increases in both handle and attendance. In addition to the graded stakes races coming up this weekend, reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra will race at Monmouth this weekend in the Lady’s Secret.

This week at the site we’ll continue our series on pedigree handicapping with an article on angles for 2-year-old or “baby” races. In addition to marking the height of the summer racing season, Del Mar and Saratoga traditionally are also the height of baby racing, so we want to help you be prepared! This week is also the Claiming Crown at Canterbury Park where the hard working horses in the claiming division strut their stuff for bigger purses and more glory. We’ll have a Ten Things You Should Know about Claiming Crown plus roll out a review of Andrew Beyer’s seminal Picking Winners, number two in our HRF Index of Top 5 Handicapping Books.

I am really psyched about Arlington Million day after this weekend with Paddy O’Prado and Tuscan Evening coming in with a tear (and don’t forget that win by Workin for Hops in the American Derby). In addition, last weekend Gio Ponti showed he is back so it should be a pretty good International Festival of Racing at Arlington next month.

  • It’s a bit of a bummer that General Quarters will miss the Arlington Millions, other than that it’s going to be a great field! I found the replay of the American Derby and just added it, thx for the reminder!
