Getting Ready for Round Two
By Dana Byerly, Hello Race Fans Co-founder

Preakness week is upon us, where Triple Crown dream hang in the balance. Will Super Saver exit the Preakness with a shot at rising to legendary status? Will a fresh horse that skipped that Derby step up and win the second jewel of the Triple Crown? We’ll know soon enough.

This week we’ll profile the Preakness and take a look at some handicapping angles that might come in handy. Did you know that for a brief period in time the Preakness was run in New York? Neither did I, but like most cool things, the Preakness spent a little time in New York City! Later in the week we’ll have Ten Things You Should Know about the Preakness, a new format we’ll use to profile races!

On the handicapping front we’ll break down fractions to help you get a deeper understanding of how to factor pace. From a psychological point of view we’ll also explore Rooting vs. Wagering… sometimes it’s tough to separate the two, especially in a race like the Preakness where you may really be rooting for a particular horse! We’ll also take a historical look at how “new shooters”, or horses that didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby, have fared in the Preakness. And of course, we’ll have a Top 5 Preakness Index and our picks for the Preakness card.

In other noteworthy news, if you haven’t seen the incredible documentary The First Saturday in May, now’s your chance to see it for free on Hulu during the month of May! Make sure to 1) leave a review and 2) buy the DVD if you like it!

And finally the Black-Eyed Susan draws a competitive field for this Friday. Had you subscribed to the Derby Prep Alert you would be familiar with many of the starters… but it’s not too late to find out about Tidal Pool, No Such Word, C C’s Pal, Diva Delite and Seeking the Title.
