Week of August 9, 2010
By Dana Byerly, Hello Race Fans Co-founder
It was a bittersweet week, complete with thrilling wins, early retirements, injuries and the sad sudden loss of a top class mare.
Concord Point, Majestic Perfection and Secret Gypsy who came out of the Iowa Festival of Racing in June, proved that they were no flukes taking the West Virginia Derby, Albert G. Vanderbilt and Honorable Miss respectively. Champagne d’Oro also proved that she was no fluke with an emphatic win in The Test. The Quality Road / Blame showdown delivered the exciting stretch duel all had hoped for with the nod going to Blame, who accelerated explosively in the stretch. And last but not least, Zenyatta also did not disappoint, scoring her third win the Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar and improving her record to an impressive 18-0.
The talented Fanny Freud, who was originally entered in The Test, was scratched and retired with an injury. Desert Party and Bullsbay were also unexpectedly retired this week with injuries. Winslow Homer, the winner of last week’s Curlin Stakes, also turned up with an injury but is just taking some time off. West coast riding phenom Joe Talamo is out for the remainder of the Del Mar meet with a sprained wrist and Jeremy Bridgmohan is released from hospital after a scary incident in the Saratoga paddock.
The saddest news, however, is the sudden death the talented turf mare Tuscan Evening, who suffered an apparent heart attack on the gallop out after a work at Del Mar this weekend. Our sincerest condolences to her connections. Check out her profile at Horse Racing Nation for a look at Tuscan Evening’s recent results and past performances.
Coming up this week on the site we’ll discover Ten Things You Should Know about the Adirondack Stakes and review the number one handicapping book in our Top Five Handicapping Books Index, Betting Thoroughbreds for the 21st Century by Steve Davidowitz. And if you’re interested in harness racing, this coming weekend is Back to the Track week, aimed at getting fans to attend the races. Even if you’re not into harness racing, the sentiment is still a good one!
