Week of August 16, 2010
By Dana Byerly, Hello Race Fans Co-founder
Several interesting performances occurred over the weekend, including Interactif getting back to his winning ways in the National Racing Museum Stakes, Telling, the overlooked winner of last year’s rendition of the Sword Dancer and Position Limit delivering the goods in the Adirondack. The Breeders’ Cup Mile got a bit more interesting with Sidney’s Candy dominant and record setting turf debut in the La Jolla at Del Mar and Goldikova’s defeat to upsetter Makfi in the Jacques Le Marois at Deauville. It should be noted that Goldikova’s defeat came over extremely soft turf, not a situation she’s likely to encounter at this year’s venue, Churchill Downs. Another impressive front-running turf win was turned in by Wasted Tears in the John C. Mabee at Del Mar.
No Such Word turned in a strong performance in the Monmouth Oaks and maiden winner Miami Deco returned $132.10 for his win in the Canadian Breeders’ Stakes at Woodbine. Hall of Fame jockey Russell Baze clocked his 11,000th win this weekend at the Sonoma County Fair meet. Aside from his record setting amount of wins, Baze is also know for being the regular rider of Lost in the Fog.
The class of 2010 was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame this week. HRF Contributing Editor Teresa Genaro recaps the ceremony at Brooklyn Backstretch and we’ve compiled video playlists at YouTube of all of the contemporary inductees. See replays for newly minted Hall of Famers Azeri, Best Pal, Point Given and jockey Randy Romero.
Coming up this week we’ll take a look at show betting, find out Ten Things You Should Know about the Arlington Millions and in, honor of the his victories in the Arlington Millions, we’ll review the film John Henry: Steel Driving Race Horse.
We also have other big news, we’ve acquired Raceday360, an excellent source of horse racing news and commentary!
